FICA Master Class I

Susanta Mandal - Mapping Movement
18th - 25th May 2015

Timings: 18th, 19th, 22nd and 25th May, 2015: 4 – 7 pm
         23rd May, 2015: 11 am – 5 pm

Susanta Mandal's work combines kinetic installations that use light, shadow, movement and stillness, mechanical constructions and human imagery. Over the years he has developed various contraptions and apparatuses that are on one hand playful and at the same time have an uncanny and unsettling effect, destabilising our notions of reality. Photographs placed under moving magnifying glass, soap bubbles in the process of continuous mutations, gunny sacks that breathe ever so gently and magic lanterns laid bare, are some of the elements he has steadily explored over the years. These rudimentary contraptions, charged with metaphoric potential, speak about time, movement, duration, image and memory.

The workshop will focus on Mandal's alignment with low technology and his DIY aesthetics that return to the physicality and materiality of the object. It will help participants combine scientific rational modes and personal, imaginative ways of perceiving phenomena and exploring them further within their practice. Participants will be encouraged to make their own contraptions and explore principles of movement and duration.

This workshop is recommended for those who share similar concerns in their practice. Please apply if you have an abiding interest in exploring the intersections between art and technology, in particular the different facets of kinetic art.

FICA Master Class
May - August 2015

The FICA Master Class
is a series designed for young artists who are looking to closely engage with an experienced practitioner through a set of workshops that explores his/her practice. These intensive learning modules focus on innovative approaches to diverse mediums and materials. They open up possibilities of conceptualising and making through the process of research, reading, exploring material/mediums, collaboration and exchange. Each master class has been designed around the practice of the artist who conducts the session and provides triggers to young practitioners to experiment and explore. The Master Class series will be held on a monthly basis between May and August 2015.

The workshops will generally be week-long sessions, with 3-4 hours classes. Classes include both practice and theory. Basic materials for the classes will be provided. Participants will need to bring their own laptops/cameras as required.

Upcoming workshops with Gauri Gill,Samudra Kajal Saikia and others - Do watch this space for updates.

FICA's educational outreach focuses primarily on two questions – how do we use the art resources that are available in a gallery/museum/library to engage better with the audience; and how can we use art education as an important cultural tool that can extend itself to everyday life? Each programme is thus tailored for a particular audience, developed in collaboration with practicing professionals, and creates a space for exchange and deeper engagement with the subject in hand. Participants are invited to share their work and open themselves to constructive feedback from their peer group. For any queries write to us at info@ficart.org
