Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda has conceived an exhibition for the Hamburger Bahnhof that, for the first time, compositionally unites the two symmetrical halls on the upper level of the museum's east and west wings. The exhibition's title "db" (abbr. for decibel) refers to this symmetry while simultaneously indicating the complementary relationship between the two exhibition spaces. Ikeda has designed the white room and the black room as counterparts, not only physically (brightness, color), but also conceptually and perceptually. The project is a composition in which time and space are shaped through the most minimal use of sound, light and visual elements. It is the artist's first solo exhibition in Germany.

The eponymous work "db" (2012) is centrally placed in both halls. In one room, it consists of a black super-directional parabolic loudspeaker that projects a pure wave of sound into the white space; in the other room, a powerful searchlight projects a beam of white light into the black space. The sound in the white room is reduced to a standing sine wave, the simplest musical building block. Every movement by a visitor alters the sonic field, allowing it to be experienced individually. The beam of light in the black room is directed through a hole in a wall at one end of the space and thus becomes perceptible as a white circle. The beam consists of pure white light that, analogously to white noise, contains all the colors of the spectrum. Here, too, visitors' movements alter the space; whenever they cross the beam of light, reflections illuminate the dark room.

Two other work complexes in the exhibition, "the irreducible [nº1-10]" (2009) and "the transcendental [nº4]" (2012), also complement each other. In the white room, the ten-part pigment print series "the irreducible", which consists of over 1 million digits each rendered in black on black stands in contrast to the ten video projections of "the transcendental" in the black room. There, a transcendental number consisting of an infinite number of digits is luminously represented, zooming by at an ultra-fast frame rate while generating sounds in real time. Both works involve the representation of infinity based on mathematical research. Here the visitor can see respectively hear a tiny fragment of this endlessness in each space, as if through a window frame in the wall.

Since the mid-1990s, Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966, lives in Paris) has been among the foremost international composers and artists in the realm of cutting-edge digital technologies and their integration into visual and acoustic presentations. His works are based on spatiotemporal compositions in which the musical and visual material is reduced to a minimum: sine waves, sound pulses, pixels of light and numerical data. He investigates sound, time and space on the basis of mathematical methods and transforms them in his concerts and installations into an intense experience for the audience.

The exhibition "db" by Ryoji Ikeda is the latest project in the "Works of Music by Visual Artists" series, which Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V. has presented in collaboration with the Nationalgalerie Berlin since 1999 and, since 2002, also with MaerzMusik, the contemporary music festival of the Berliner Festspiele. Since the start of the series, musical works and installations have already been presented by: Hanne Darboven, Yves Klein, Hermann Nitsch, Rodney Graham, Stephen Prina, Lawrence Weiner / Peter Gordon, Christian Marclay, Käthe Kruse, Carsten Nicolai, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Cory Arcangel, and Egill Sæbjörnsson & Marcia Moraes.

For many young artists, German painting around 1980 was strongly influenced by the Punk movement emanating especially from London and New York. Many painters felt a direct tie to the music scene, organizing concerts or playing in short-lived bands. Punk rock was typified by provocation, destructive pleasure, and a questioning of established social values. The punk scene furthermore soon developed into a trendsetter in terms of fashion, design and accessories. The punk "style" left its mark on urban street art and photography, on the outer habitus as well as the shaping of the younger generation's political and social beliefs. This cultural revolt's "style" also had a direct affect on the visual arts, particularly painting. It manifested itself in an art scene that in the late 1970s was attempting to distance itself from a concept and object art that was regarded as austere and theoretically vapid.

The exhibition documents the fight over traditional formal and iconographic patterns, their reassessment, the partly aggressive anarchistic pleasure in breaching taboos as well as narrative unpredictability.

Works will be presented from the "Sammlung Tiefe Blicke" that has been on permanent loan to the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt since 1984. Large format paintings by the ironists Peter Angermann, Blalla W. Hallmann, Milan Kunc, Jiri Georg Dokoupil, and Walter Dahn are contrasted with the "wild," neoexpressionist explosions of color by such artists as Helmut Middendorf, Elvira Bach, Albert Oehlen, Volker Tannert, and Bernd Zimmer. At the core of the exhibition are 19 paintings by Martin Kippenberger. The genre of painting is supplemented by sculptures by Felix Droese, Meuser, Harald Klingelhöller and the anarchistic "Endart" group from Berlin.

The accompanying program for this exhibition encompasses a wide-ranging series of educational events such as guided tours, workshops and lectures. Highpoints are a reading by the writer and musician Thomas Meinecke ("FSK") on March 15, 2012 presented in cooperation with the Centralstation Darmstadt and the Literaturhaus Darmstadt as well as a concert with the band "Fehlfarben" on April 27, 2012 in the Centralstation.

A catalog is published on the occasion of the exhibition.

Team Gallery is pleased to present an installation of new work by Köln-based artist Andreas Schulze. The exhibition will run from February 23rd through March 24th, 2012. Team Gallery is located at 47 Wooster Street, cross streets Grand and Broome. Concurrently, our 83 Grand Street space will debut new work by New York-based painter Davis Rhodes.

Andreas Schulze's practice allows for complex architectural settings that delight in domestic furniture and manicured gardens that have excessively round, full, and deep anatomies. For the artist's first exhibition at Team Gallery, Schulze presents new paintings alongside painted and found objects like lamps, tables, chairs, carpets, and curtains, accompanied by a hand-painted gallery floor. The immersive and site-specific installation re-configures the variable spatial relationships of viewer and object, viewer and window, viewer and painting.

The installation includes various domestic furniture pieces in the working method of Allan Kaprow or Gilbert and George, for instance - situated in a congruent zone of life and art. Human-scaled harlequin lamps have thick, patterned trucks topped with bulbous, oversized shades. A carpet placed at the entryway functions as a domestic doormat, while a second carpet is installed in the corner as a three-sided inverted-pyramid sculpture. Entitled Dirt Corner, the material is painted in gradients to gradually shade to black in the center, a humorous household dust bunny doubling as an intergalactic black hole. A hanging curtain presents the façade of a small home with one door and one window, while simultaneously functioning as a space divider one might find inside a massive living area. Painted cotton panels function as unusable tablecloths, elaborately covering a table's surface in a parallel gesture to the horizontal painting that covers the floor.

The subjects of Schulze's work are impenetrable windows, doors, and mirrors, nebulous interiors and landscapes. He obsessively undulates between hard and soft, inside and outside, playful and melancholic, comfortable and menacing. His flat painting style paired with the extreme depth of his illusions belies Schulze's complicated relationship to the history of painting. He employs the perspectival foreshortening and sfumato tonal shading techniques of realism that date back to the Renaissance, in addition to using the barren landscape backgrounds of Surrealism, the absurd object mash-ups of dada, the accessible furniture design art of Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, and the dramatically rendered subjects of neo-expressionist painting of the 1980s, among which his work was first shown and associated. His painted room and object installations stand in close relationship to the elaborate narrative scenes set by Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, and Kurt Schwitters.

Schulze's intricate and evocative dramatic sites are reminiscent of Wagnerian opera or ancient Greek theater. Schulze returns to New York with a poetic, yet tense, amalgam of installation, painting, and sculpture, in which every object is sabotaged furniture, a decorated and mythic object for living, suffused with extreme magnitude while rinsed of all function.

Schulze was born in Hannover in 1955 and has been exhibiting his work since 1981. Last year the artist had a major survey exhibition with an extensive catalogue published by the Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg and the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren. Schulze's work has been exhibited at museums internationally including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Museum in London, and the Kunstforeningen in Copenhagen, among many others.

Team is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by New York-based artist Davis Rhodes. The exhibition will run from February 23rd through March 24th, 2012. Team Gallery is located at 83 Grand Street, between Wooster and Greene, on the ground floor. Concurrently, our 47 Wooster Street space will house an installation by Köln-based artist Andreas Schulze.

For his second solo exhibition at Team, Davis Rhodes presents a selection of paintings made with spray paint on foamcore board. Using the logic of radical material transformation, lightweight panels lean flat against the wall, while others, warped by the application of water-based paint, stand independently in space. At the standard size of eight feet tall by four feet wide, the paintings have a bold physical presence in the gallery that belies their precarious material means.

Rhodes' work carries strong reference to post-painterly and hard-edge abstraction in addition to the deep influence of pop appropriation spanning from commercial signage to the guerilla tactics of amateur street advertising. As with his previous bodies of work, Rhodes channels the aesthetic practices of public visual economy into his abstractions. His paintings are composed of an economical vernacular: hard, clean lines; sheer reflective fields of color; and open, iconic signs, appear to contain a clear communicative promise. The works challenge the viewer with mute austerity as stark signs that refuse to perform as signifiers. Some pieces resemble imploded mirrors, offering only shadowy reflections and subtle visual distortions, while others are blank slabs, mirroring only the white space of the gallery. With opaque colors and the layering of whites, Rhodes' work complicates ideas of frontal forms in painting while at the same time denying real references.

The large glossy surfaces are scattered with drips, leaks, cracks, discolorations and folds which are subtle traces of the parallel and unpoetic painterly reality of the materials Rhodes employs. The functional, base application of spray paint to foamboard is emphatically outside the frame of painting and the context of the gallery. This external provenance persists in the work as antithetical to the pristine and protected presence of unique objects viewed within the gallery setting. The works hinge on the tension of display versus use values, suggesting the impermanence of their visual status.

The obstructions and reflections in Rhodes' work mime situationist, interventionist, and textual gestures of reversal and provocation. These monolithic forms combine the extreme restrictions of minimalism and monochromes with an open, porous practice that finds practical antecedents in the positions of Arte Povera and post-minimalism. Rhodes' emphasized material strategies echo a legacy of artists as diverse as Blinky Palermo, Gordon Matta-Clark, Oliver Mosset, Robert Ryman, and Richard Serra.

Davis Rhodes has been exhibiting his work since 2006. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Antwerp.

Until recently, Turkish artist Yüksel Arslan (born 1933, lives and works in Paris) remained almost unknown to a broader public. In 1962, he left his homeland and went to live in Paris where he has worked ever since on a visual oeuvre by and through the reception of cultural, sociological, philosophical and artistic literature in his apartment. The exhibition at Kunsthalle Zürich presents for the first time a selection of over 200 works since 1959 outside of Turkey and focuses on the so called Artures, works on paper using a unique technique with special paints and being marked by an expressiveness that Eugène Delacroix has already looked upon as a typical characteristic of the orient. Thematically, the work is permeated by a confrontation with the relationship between thought and mysticism, between myth, science, and visual arts, and the philosophical, literary and musical currents which might be described as the foundation of Western thought, in the awareness that the knowledge anchored here could hardly have arisen without the experience of other peoples and cultures.

Arslan does not use classical paints, but mixes pigments with various vegetable extracts, bodily fluids, other natural elements (petals, grass etc.), and additional substances such as oil, coal and stones. This process of production is an important part of the pictorial invention process, and does not represent any separate preparation of the actual artistic work. In Arslan's opinion painting, since the dawn of modern art, has degenerated into a medium whose origins numerous artists have increasingly neglected. Like Jean Dubuffet, the artist seeks to throw off the ballast of today in order to bring out what—before the beginning of a culture—constituted the "essence". It is only the path via what has superficially been transcended by culture, but in reality only distorted, that allows Arslan to rediscover the pristine, which he then consistently venerates, for example procreation and sexuality. As he occupies himself with modern and ancient languages, history, philosophy, music and ancient cultures, he is familiar with the cultural "ballast". Arslan has come to recognize that much of this does not reflect the essence of man. He senses similarities of the vernacular in the origins of cultures all over the world.

Arslan's Artures are created in groups that unite not only socially relevant themes and questions, but also thematize the experiences that relate to his own life story. The three cycles with the titles L'Homme I – III, Le Capital are general in their approach, while the two series Influances I & II stand for the artist's occupation with personalities and their achievements, which are not only relevant to his approach but also emphasize his great affinity to literature and music. In this sense he has created works relating to, among others, Johann Sebastian Bach, Charles Baudelaire, Samuel Beckett, René Descartes, Sigmund Freud and Franz Kafka. In the series Autoartures, Arslan deals exclusively with autobiographical events: memories relating to his family and his background—the confrontation with his own pristinity.

The exhibition is curated by Beatrix Ruf in collaboration with Oliver Zybok and will travel to Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and Kunsthalle Wien.

Bookshelves made of books, bulky cupboards with no space inside, soft, foamy rustic furniture and classics made of carbon fiber: Redesign and ready-made furniture, traditional workmanship using new materials and the transformation of design classics are the themes of the 'new olds' exhibition. This exhibition focuses on how tradition is evaluated in the different countries and cultures and what is done with it.

Design has had a short but very successful history in the Western world and has quickly become an established element in the collective understanding of culture. And it is gaining significance outside the Western hemisphere, too. Successful ideas are copied and varied, but such "innovations" often derive from a historical vocabulary of forms and thus constitute independent forms that are characteristic of a country or culture. The exhibition new olds showcases 58 objects showing design between tradition and innovation. In all, 45 designers and groups of designers who work mainly in Germany, other European countries and the USA have reached some surprising results.

The connection to local discourse supports the dialogue character of new olds: Indian designers are invited to contribute to this IfA exhibition, and a blog is documenting the work additionally presented during the tour, which is also a platform for continuing the discourse and exchanging thought processes between the different countries and continents of the whole tour.

New olds is one of a series of design exhibitions that IfA has been presenting to an increasingly international audience to great acclaim since 1998. The aim of these exhibitions is to address interdisciplinary subjects relating to contemporary German and European design presenting different positions and lines of thought.

The participating Indian artists are Errol Pires, Rajiv Jassal and Bikram Mittra.

About the film

In 1969, Yoko Ono and John Lennon produced a 75-minute mini-feature called Rape. The premise of this film comes from an Ono film score published in 1968. "‹The cameraman will chase a girl on a street with a camera persistently until he corners her in an alley, and, if possible, until she is in a falling position.› The execution [...] is one of the most violent and sexually charged movies ever made - even if flesh never touches flesh. [...]"

The film stars Eva Majlata, a 21 year old Hungarian actress who cannot speak English. She cannot escape the prying attentions of the camera which follows her around the streets of London, through a park, allowing her no privacy and finally corners her in her apartment. Rape was shot when John and Yoko were both at Great Charlotte Street Hospital following Yoko's miscarriage, the cameraman was Nick Knowland. The film received its world premiere on Austrian Television on 31st March 1969. That year it was also shown at the Montreux Television Festival and the Mannheim Film Festival.

About the speaker

RoseLee Goldberg is a US-based art historian, author, critic and curator. Her study of performance art, Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present, first published in 1979 and now in its third edition (2001), is a key text for teaching performance in universities and has been translated into over seven languages, including Chinese, Croatian, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Her other publications include Performance Since 1960 (1998), Laurie Anderson (2000) and Shirin Neshat (2002).

In 2004, Goldberg founded PERFORMA, a non-profit multi-disciplinary arts organization for the "research, development, and presentation of 21st Century visual art performance." Her forthcoming books include PERFORMA, the first in a series of publications to accompany the PERFORMA biennials and Performance Now: New Art, New Dance, New Media published by Thames and Hudson. She was recently named a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture and Communication.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in partnership with the Paula Rego Foundation/Casa des Histórias, presents for the first time in Paris a representative exhibition of the highly renowned British artist Paula Rego, born in Lisbon in 1935.

The artist, who works on memories of her childhood spent in Portugal, trained as an artist in London, where she lives.

Bringing together a collection of works created between 1988 and 2010, a period representing the artist's total maturity, the exhibition, which in no way is a retrospective, centres—and concentrates—on a selection of the thematic series which have contributed the most to the international recognition of her strength and originality.

With a selection of paintings, drawings and prints, as part of a narrative which intertwines with other artistic disciplines like literature, cinema or drama, and the multiplicity of her resources, both scholarly and popular, Paula Rego appears as a figurative artist who masters both the technical tools and the aesthetic resources of the old masters, developing an artistic language which speaks to our time, disrupting or provoking it, questioning and altering the spectator. The series on abortion (Untitled) (1998) or the Mulher Cão (Dog woman) (1994), where women are portrayed, unexpectedly, with an aura of energy, determination and power, are examples of her potent effect on our awareness and behaviour.

The themes explore the numerous and complex fields of human relations, the dark and emotional side of their nature and the ambiguity of their actions, filtered through a militant feminine awareness. One might think that it represents an unreservedly feminine point of view, but it is, above all, Paula Rego's point of view that is expressed, unique and distinctive. In 1998 the artist painted an angel, protector and avenger, a feminine figure carrying sword and sponge, symbols of the Passion. The drama is played out around her under the merciless scrutiny of her emotions.

The Royal Academy of Arts presents the first major exhibition in the UK to showcase David Hockney's landscape work. Vivid paintings inspired by the Yorkshire countryside, many exhibited here for the first time, are shown alongside related drawings and digital video. Over 150 works are on display, the majority of which have been created in the last eight years. The exhibition also includes a selection of works dating as far back as 1956, which places the recent work in the context of Hockney's extended exploration of and fascination with landscape. The exhibition takes the visitor on a journey through Hockney's view of the world.

Initially, the exhibition addresses the various approaches that Hockney has taken towards the depiction of landscape throughout his career. Past works include Rocky Mountains and Tired Indians, 1965 (The National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh), Garrowby Hill, 1998 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) and A Closer Grand Canyon, 1998 (Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek). Hockney's exploration of the depiction of space is traced from work dating to his time as a student, through his photocollages of the 1980s and the Grand Canyon paintings of the late 1990s, to the recent paintings of East Yorkshire, frequently made en plein air.

The exhibition reveals the artist's emotional engagement with the landscape he knew in his youth, as, in a series of galleries each dedicated to a particular motif, he examines daily variations in light and weather conditions and the cycles of growth and decay as the seasons change. Since undertaking this exhibition in 2007, Hockney's intense observation of his surroundings has become manifested in a variety of media. Highlights include three groups of new work made specifically for this exhibition.

Firstly, a series of paintings inspired by Claude Lorrain's painting The Sermon on the Mount, 1656 (The Frick Collection, New York) in which Hockney explores its unusual treatment of space, culminating in the monumental painting: A Bigger Message, 2010. Secondly, new digital videos featuring motifs familiar from Hockney's paintings are displayed on multiple screens; filmed simultaneously using nine and eighteen cameras, they provide a spellbinding visual experience. Hockney's in-depth engagement with the works of the Old Masters and the historical use of optical aids was made clear in his book Secret Knowledge (2001). Hockney too has always embraced new technologies for the purposes of image making, most recently the iPad.

The exhibition culminates in the largest of the Royal Academy's galleries, with the immersive work The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven). Hockney's glorious homage to nature is dominated by a painting on 32 canvases, surrounded by over fifty large-scale iPad drawings printed on paper, which chronicle the advancing season in breathtaking detail. Hockney has found in landscape the ultimate subject for 'A Bigger Picture'.

Gasworks hosts a talk by the artists taking part in No Lone Zone, an exhibition curated by Iria Candela and Taiyana Pimentel. The talk at Gasworks preceeds the exhibition that will take place at Tate Modern's Level 2 gallery from 27 January to 13 May 2012.

No Lone Zone is a technical term which refers to a restricted area where at least two people must have sight of a critical or sensitive procedure. The exhibition brings together works by Cinthia Marcelle, Teresa Margolles, David Zink Yi and the Tercerunquinto collective that explore this concept in relation to the vulnerability of current social and economic structures. Consisting of sculpture, video and installation, the exhibition reflects on the senses of loss, danger or urgency that inform human actions and collective endeavours in such a turbulent global context.

The talk at Gasworks will be moderated by Catherine Petitgas (Collector and Trustee of Triangle Network) and will include the curators of the exhibition, Cinthia Marcelle, David Zink Yi and the Tercerunquinto collective. It will provide an opportunity to meet the artists and discuss their practices in an open, public forum.

No Lone Zone is result of a collaboration between Tate Modern, London and Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Mexico City. The curatorial exchange is supported by the World Collections Programme, with the collaboration of Gasworks. The Level 2 Gallery programme is made possible with the generous support of Catherine Petitgas.

Vadehra Art Gallery features, for the first time in India, the work of the legendary Yoko Ono. Her role as an artist, musician, filmmaker, and activist since the early sixties is of great significance to the art world, and continues to influence generations today.

There are two simultaneous exhibitions of Ono's work - OUR BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS, at Vadehra Art Gallery, D-178 Okhla Phase 1, and a parallel exhibition titled THE SEEDS at Vadehra Art Gallery, D-53 Defence Colony, New Delhi.

The exhibition OUR BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS brings into focus the issue of gender. Ono has always been committed to exploring the experiences of women and has created a special new installation for India that engages the audience and sheds light on some of the challenges women face today. Apart from this latest installation, the exhibition in Delhi recalls some of her legendary instruction-based works.

The parallel exhibition titled THE SEEDS showcases some of Yoko Ono's earlier work – films, collaborations with other artists, instructions, photographs – along with historical documentation of performances and installations to present a composite picture of her longstanding artistic career and commitment to peace.

There is also a series of Public Art Projects, spread across over 20 venues in Delhi. These include WISH TREES, an interactive project that the artist first made in 1996, large scale banners that carry Yoko Ono's specially chosen messages for India, as well as a set of 'instructions' in the form of postcards.

The Public Art Projects and outreach activities are co-organised by Vadehra Art Gallery and The Japan Foundation. Additional support for these projects and support for the performance has been provided by Outset India. The American Center has provided in-part support for the exhibition at the Okhla Gallery. Haroon Mirza and Suzanne Mooney, whose respective solo exhibitions /|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/| and The Edge of Collapse are on show in the galleries from Saturday 21 January, discuss their work in events here next week.

On Tuesday 24 January, 6pm, Suzanne Mooney speaks with Dr. Mick Wilson, an artist, writer and academic. They consider Mooney's methods of image making and her creative influences, as well as the text Wilson has written to accompany the exhibition.

Haroon Mirza is in conversation with Marie-Anne McQuay, curator at Spike Island, on Saturday 28 January, 2pm, touching on the artist's collaborative approach to making work, his interests in underground cultures and his most recent projects.

	In Numbers In Numbers is a survey of artists' serial publications between 1955 and the present—a neglected art form that is neither artists' book nor ephemera, but is entirely its own unique object. From the small press in the 1960s to the DIY zine culture in the 1980s and early 1990s, artists have seized on the magazine/ postcard format as a new kind of art production. A large cross-section of publications is surveyed, from 1950s LA to present day Japan. The diversity of the list reflects the backgrounds of the producing artists and the wide range of techniques and media. The exhibition is accompanied by the publication In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955, edited by Philip Aarons and Andrew Roth (New York: PPP Editions, 2010). In Numbers is presented with special thanks to Philip Aarons and Shelley Fox Aarons. Lis Rhodes Since the 1970s, Lis Rhodes has been making radical and experimental films that challenge the viewer to reconsider film as a medium of communication and presentation of image, language, and sound. Dissonance & Disturbance presents films, which negotiate the relationship of image to sound, the presence of injustice and the language of resistance and opposition. A cross-section of films charting Lis Rhodes' career will be presented, including Dresden Dynamo (1972), Light Reading (1978), Hang on a Minute series (1983–1985), A Cold Draft (1988), and more recent works such as In the Kettle (2010) and Whitehall (2012). A series of talks, events and performances accompany the exhibitions, offering a forum to explore issues around the work. Design Talks at Spike Island

Our Winter programme of events features two talks from graphic designers who push the boundaries of their respective practices.

Fraser Muggeridge collaborates with artists, writers and cultural institutions on a wide range of formats, from artists' books and exhibition catalogues to maps and posters. He speaks here on Tuesday 31 January about the role typography can play within a contemporary art context.

Dutch design studio Metahaven combine commissions with their own research and have recently developed a new visual identity for WikiLeaks. They discuss this project and their wider approach to design on Thursday 23 February.

Screenings of Fayçal Baghriche's The Message, which will mark the beginning of his residency at Artists-in-Residence Dubai (A.i.R. Dubai), a programme of residencies and commissions in Dubai in partnership with Delfina Foundation, The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Art Dubai and Tashkeel.

Baghriche's film brings together the English and Arabic versions of the epic film The Message (1977), which tells the story about the birth of the Islamic faith. Directed by Moustapha Akkad, the two versions were shot simultaneously following the same script and using the same sets and costumes; the only difference to be found is the languages spoken and the actors, who were drawn from the world of Arab cinema and of Hollywood, in order to appeal to different audiences. Synthesising these two versions into a single edit that follows the script's complete structure, Baghriche creates a dialogue between the Arab and American actors. Referring to cinema's universalism, and language, Baghriche reinterprets the film, as well as the medium itself, into a platform for exchange and encounter.

Save the Date: Her Noise Symposium

Tate Modern, 3 - 5 May 2012

A three day event investigating feminist discourses in sound, launching with a performance and talk by Pauline Oliveros. The symposium, which brings together contributions by leadings artists, performers, theoreticians and writers aims to provide a platform to further develop these emergent feminist discourses in sound and music, with an emphasis on tactics that challenge and / or infiltrate canonical readings. The event marks the donation of the Her Noise Archive to University of the Arts London Archives and Special Collections housed at London College of Communication, and is realised as a collaboration between Electra, CRiSAP (Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice) and Tate.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan: The Right to Silence

1 February - 17 March 2012

The Right to Silence is an event series exploring the legal status of the voice and builds on the research and polemics at the core of Lawrence Abu Hamdan's ongoing project Aural Contract. Taking the form of multidisciplinary presentations responding to tracks from the Aural Contract Audio Archive, a compilation of sounds related to the politics of listening, The Right to Silence brings together a mixture of legal scholars, artists and writers. The series is a collaboration between Electra and the Showroom and coincides with Abu Hamdan's exhibition The Freedom of Speech Itself at the Showroom. EXHIBITION: The Challenger's Report

A Solo Exhibition by Irene Kopelman

The Challenger's Report is the first UK solo exhibition by Argentinian artist Irene Kopelman, which looks at how relationships to landscape and the natural world are culturally conditioned and subject to change. It includes a newly commissioned series of large-scale paintings of Antarctic microfossils presented alongside the installation La morfologia del paisaje determina sus vistas (The Morphology of the Landscape Determines its Views, 2011) and a hand-made replica of a graphic telescope, an early 19th century optical instrument.

Alma Mater: New Work UK Touring Programme

This year LUX's annual touring programme of recent British video has been curated by ICA film curator Steven Cairns. The programme includes work by Steven Claydon, Torsten Lauschmann, Clunie Reid, Rachel Reupke, Hannah Sawtell and Stephen Sutcliffe.

Alma Mater features work by six UK-based artists, dealing in representational methods of experience and social interaction. Alma Mater takes cultural identity as its starting point, to encompass the influence of visual culture on everyday experience; questioning ideas of Britishness and conceptions of national identity. Working with digital media, each artist invests a degree of experimentation and innovation in their approach to Moving Image that embeds the process within the work - the media itself becoming a near-character in the linear, and non-linear narratives. The screening includes a range of works made between 2000 and the present, and charts a significant period of change in our relationship with visual culture, and the society that shapes it.

Call for Participation: LUX Critical Forum

Critical Forum is a monthly discussion group for artists who work with the moving image to talk about ideas and practice in a mutually supportive environment and in dialogue with LUX.

The forum takes place on the first Monday of every month from 7-10pm at the LUX office and is supported by LUX (in terms of space, equipment, refreshments, online forum space and advice) but is how the meetings are run and organised is ultimately decided by group members.

The forum is or artists who are no longer in education (i.e. who do not have access to this kind of support and discussion) and who are willing to commit to the group as a participant for a period of six months.

The LUX Critical Forum is now open to new members, and there will be a preliminary meeting for the new group on Monday 6th February 2012. To register your interest in attending please email criticalforum@lux.org.uk and we will send you more information in the New Year.

The Magpie Index was commissioned by Locus+ and the De La Warr Pavilion. It debuted at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, as part of Richard Grayson's solo exhibition that opened in January 2010.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Aural Contract -
The Freedom of Speech Itself

1 February - 17 March 2012

The Showroom presents the most recent stages of Lawrence Abu Hamdan's project Aural Contract as an installation featuring a new commission The Freedom of Speech Itself - an audio documentary that looks at the politics of listening through examining the UK's controversial use of voice analysis to determine the origins and authenticity of asylum seeker's accents. Exhibited excerpts from Abu Hamdan's audio archive will join the new work, as well as a workshop led by the artist on Harold Pinter's play Mountain Language. To accompany the exhibition is a series of events titled The Right to Silence that focus on the legal status of the voice, programmed in collaboration with Electra.

Studio Voltaire's open submission exhibition aims to showcase the strength and diversity of its membership, which currently comprises over 400 artists. The exhibition is open to entry to all artists, working in any medium, who are studio or associate members of Studio Voltaire. The members' exhibition takes place every two years and is selected by a changing panel, made up of artists, writers and curators. This year's selectors are Mike Nelson, artist and Jenni Lomax, Director, Camden Arts Centre.

Studio Voltaire is pleased to announce Not Our Class a new programme of education and participatory projects that through research and practice will take the work of Jo Spence as a starting point for investigating the legacy and potentials of her work in relation to contemporary culture and life. Through a series of commissions, offsite projects, workshops, public events and reading groups situated both within Studio Voltaire's neighbourhood and contemporary art discourse the programme will explore the new turn towards education and participation within contemporary art practice.

Jo Spence (1934 - 1992) was a key figure on the UK photographic scene from the mid seventies and crucial in debates on photography and the critique of representation. Her work engaged with a range of photographic genres, from documentary to Phototherapy. Through her own artistic practice and teaching, which are very closely linked, she rigorously explored complex issues of class, gender, health and the body, combining personal experience, political understanding and critical theory. The work produced near the end of her life dealt directly with her experience of having cancer and the treatment she received by the medical establishment.

Not Our Class coincides with a major presentation of Jo Spence's work made in partnership with SPACE and Studio Voltaire and made across multiple sites across London during Summer 2012.

Not Our Class is supported by Arts Council England, London and Bloomberg.

The Jo Spence exhibition is supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation and The Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation.

West of Rome, as part of the Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945–1980 Performance and Public Art Festival, organized by the Getty in conjunction with LA><Art, is proud to present the premiere of two new performances by Andrea Fraser and Miss Vaginal Davis. Both works are part of a series, curated by Emi Fontana, of new performances inspired by the influential Los Angeles-based Woman's Building. The curatorial aim of the series is to highlight the tremendous impact of the Woman's Building and feminist practices on contemporary art production.

For Men on the Line, KPFK, 1972, Fraser transcribed and edited the dialogue from a 1972 live radio broadcast in which four men, committed to feminist struggles, discuss the hopes and anxieties that feminism stirred in them. The artist performs all four participants and, by inhabiting the discourse of men struggling to engage with feminism, Fraser takes up the feminist challenge of emerging from internalized stereotypes to redefine the self and experience empathy across the boundaries of gender identity and hierarchy. Fraser's performance touches on some of the central concerns of the feminist movement: how social norms are internalized and embodied; how psychological structures are projected and performed socially and interpersonally; and how gender identity and hierarchies are produced and reproduced in these processes. It also touches on some of the central arguments within feminism around issues of separatism, essentialism, and the relationship between feminist struggles and other forms of domination. Fraser shows us how Woman's Building and the larger feminist movement tackled these issues early on and were influential in sparking a dialogue that expanded beyond the confines of women's organizations, igniting the hope that women's liberation could mean the liberation of everyone.

Andrea Fraser is one of the most well known American performance artists working today. Her work is often associated with feminism and institutional critique, exemplified by her site-specific approach to investigating social and psychological structures.

Miss Davis' My Pussy Is Still in Los Angeles (I Only Live in Berlin) is a Lesbian Separatist tea party that will combine pre-recorded music, spoken-word narratives, and live performance to explore the utopian promise of Los Angeles and the dystopia of the late 1970s through the lens of the Woman's Building, gender issues, and her own career as a performance artist. The event will also feature a high tea reception and the publication of a zine—a special signed artist's book that chronicles and supplements Miss Davis' performance. The tea party will unfold through the reading of letters (fictional and not) and the spinning of records that reflect upon the history of Los Angeles in relation to the counterculture performance scene, especially that of gay and transgender performers and the activities of the Woman's Building. Designed as an homage that seeks to pay tribute to such pioneering culture workers, Davis' piece seeks, in part, to fill the gaps in the performance history of LA by creating narratives for figures that are frequently overlooked or left out of the popular record. The biographical element is strong in the work, as Davis herself was just starting her career as a performer during the 70s in L.A.

Over the last four decades, Miss Vaginal Davis has produced a diverse range of work that absolutely defies categorization. This performance marks a timely homecoming for the artist, who recently relocated to Berlin.
