The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is launching two new areas of concentration within the Master in Design Studies degree program: Art, Design and the Public Domain and Urbanism, Landscape, Ecology. Students will be accepted into these new concentrations for enrollment in fall 2010. Art, Design and the Public Domain will cross the boundaries into visual and environmental studies, cultural theory, applied computation, fabrication, art-related practices and speculative design. Associated faculty includes Svetlana Boym, Sanford Kwinter, Carrie Lambert-Beatty, Michael Meredith, David Edwards, Giuliana Bruno, Benjamin Buchloh and Helen Molesworth. Students will benefit from the program's relationships with the Institute for Spatial Experiments (Institut für Raumexperimente) of the Berlin University of the Arts and the École des Sciences Politiques in Paris. Urbanism, Landscape, Ecology addresses the recent transformations of human territory and the unprecedentedly broad reaches of our environment that are being impacted by design today. MDesS candidates in this concentration will pursue advanced studies in topics related to contemporary urbanism and landscape within the broader context of the global, social and natural environment. Candidates are invited to construct their own program of study from among the course offerings at the GSD and are also encouraged to take advantage of courses and institutional assets across the Harvard University campus and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Charles Waldheim, Chair of the department of Landscape Architecture, will serve as area coordinator. Associated faculty includes Pierre Belanger, Anita Berrizbeita, Chris Reed, and Hashim Sarkis. These new areas join and complement the four existing tracks--History and Philosophy of Design, Technology, Real Estate, and Sustainable Design--to continue our tradition of excellence in design inquiry. The three-semester MDesS program provides students with the opportunity to pursue a customized course of study, encourages interdisciplinary work, and provides access to vast resources across Harvard University. More information on the MDesS program and how to apply may be found at http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/academic/mdes/. |
