Svetlana Alpers, James Hyde and Barney Kulok discuss their own work and a collective project entitled Painting Then For Now, a series of prints; six of these are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Alpers is an art historian, critic and artist whose books include The Vexations of Art: Velázquez and Others (Yale, 2005) and The Art of Describing (Chicago, 1983); Hyde is a painter whose work is in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Denver Art Museum; Kulok is a photographer whose recent solo exhibitions include Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, NYC (2009) and Galerie Ghislaine Hussenot, Paris (2008). Presented by the BFA Fine Arts and BFA Visual & Critical Studies Departments.

The BFA Visual and Critical Studies Department at SVA is designed for ambitious students who want a strong connection between their academic and studio work. This unified, interdisciplinary approach allows students to develop the ability to understand and interpret the art, philosophy, and visual thinking of the past and present; and to make new art while learning the history of practices, theories and artworks.
