Michael Kohn Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by David Korty. In his second show with Michael Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles-based artist David Korty expands his subject matter to not only include everyday scenes, but also everyday objects. Merging his distinct geometric visual language with images of universally commonplace events and objects, this new body of work is the culmination of the artist's style and view of the world.
On view will be a collection of paintings that portray everyday objects and quotidian scenes to reveal a complex depiction of the geometric economy of the world. His figures and objects are flat and linear, sectioned by thick lines in both bright and muted colors. Korty's subject matter is markedly abstract in its rejection of volume and a clear perspective. His subject matter has weight, however, as it deconstructs our world down to its bare shapes and colors. Simplified images of gas pumps and televisions are given so much life that they hold their own next to scenes of the hustle and bustle of the everyday. Korty's process is essential to the visual uniqueness of his work; he first captures his surroundings by photographing the ordinary and then transposes and reinterprets those scenes into his stylized renderings. His muted palette and hazy atmospheres invite the viewer to look closely at the painted surface and the graphic style that makes Korty's paintings so reso nant.
David Korty was born in California in 1971. He attended the Rhode Island School of design where he earned his B.F.A. He received his M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. David Korty has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe. From 2000-2008 Korty had solo shows at China Art Objects Gallery in Los Angeles and Sadie Coles HQ in London, before his first solo show at Michael Kohn Gallery.
