Sanity Assassin, Amanda Beech
Friday 22 January, 6-9pm
Joint after party with Picture This 9-11pm, Spike Café
DJ's: Paul O'Neill, Pil & Galia Kollectiv and Randek

You are invited to join us to celebrate the launch of Sanity Assassin, Amanda Beech's first major solo show in a public gallery. Beech was awarded the main production residency for UK artists at Spike Island in 2009 which contributed to the making of this new body of work.

Sanity Assassin is a three-screen video installation with a sculptural element. A spotlit mirrored plinth displays a series of polished chainsaws situated in a custom designed waiting area; a glamorous structure with subliminal horror movie overtones and an homage to the corporate lobby of a real Los Angeles showroom. Beyond this, the video installation embodies another violence. Hard edged, uniform edits guide us through a private and nocturnal LA landscape and are set to a pulsating noise score.

Sanity Assassin is part of Beech's on-going investigations into the forceful rhetoric played out within neo-liberal narratives of freedom in philosophy, politics, architecture and popular culture.

Alongside the exhibition, Sanity Assassin, the book, will be available as a limited edition publication from Urbanomic.

Activities for Families with Steven Paige:
How about a slogan?
*This Saturday* 23 January, 12-5pm

Artists with a range of practices and techniques will temporarily set up their studio within Gallery 2; visitors of all ages will be invited to take part in activities that reflect aspects of the artists' work.

This week is hosted by Steven Paige
and his workshop, How about a slogan? A slogan is a memorable motto or phrase used in a political, commercial, religious and other contexts as a repetitive expression of an idea or purpose.  It is claimed to be the most effective means of drawing attention to one or more aspects of an ideology. In this workshop, we'll look at essential tips on how to write a killer slogan. When the text is right, we can then transfer this to a banner, placard, or even a sticker. Be proud and say it loud!

northcabin Artist Talk: Gary O'Conner
Saturday 19 December, 3pm, Associates Space

Gary O'Conner graduated in 2007 from an MA in writing the visual at Norwich School of Art and Design. His work deals with ideas around deceit, pretence and contradiction, often set within a historical context. A sense of narrative and storytelling is very important to him: he works across disciplines often combining readymade objects with audio and text.

Inherent Sin, O'Conner's recent show was at northcabin in Dec 2009.
