take pleasure in inviting you to an evening with
Naz Ikramullah
A practising visual artist who will talk on "Muslim Women – Past and Present: lives well-lived", accompanied by a screening of the Film, "Nur-e-Jehan – Light of the World".
Her art education was at the Byam Shaw School and Slade School of Art, in London, U.K. She is a painter and print-maker having exhibited her work in many places, including India. Her work can be found in The Library of Congress, DC, USA; Print Collection, the National Gallery of Art, Jordan; Cartwright Hall, Bradford, UK; CMC collection and other public and private collections.
Her film, "Making Faces", made with the National Film Board of Canada, is an educational film on mask-making. It won the First Prize in Oakland, California in 1989.
"Nur-e-Jehan – Light of the World" came about because I wanted to show that Muslim women of South Asia were part of an on-going history and have a syncretic culture. That what they do and are, comes from a long tradition of assimilation – brave, creative, working women- these women are not what the Taliban would have them become". The film was made several years ago, but its message is relevant to this day.
