| New Residency Arrival: Aaron Williamson
Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary The artist flings himself at the wall, 2008. We're delighted to welcome Aaron Williamson to Spike Island who has been awarded the Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary for 2009-10 which is now supported by newly appointed patron Anthony Gormley. Aaron will be based at Spike Island until April and will take part in Spike Open Studios 2010 (30 April-03 May). On Thurs 04 March at 6pm, Aaron will also be doing an informal show and tell about his work in the Associates space - more info coming soon. "As a disability artist (I am deaf) my work challenges the traditional valorisation of social 'outsiderness'. Thus my performances and video pieces invent such figures as mock-hermits, sham-shamans, fake feral children, charlatan saints, dubious monsters; and humorously depict pathos, failure, setback and collapse..." Congratulations to David for winning this award a few weeks ago and causing quite a stir at the award ceremony! We're delighted to have been able to support David in the lead up to this well deserved recognition of his work to date. David received the prize following the success of his touring body of work, Crossroads, which was commissioned by Spike Island in 2009. Sonia Boyce: Like Love Part Two On tour at the Bluecoat, Liverpool Following the launch of the Like Love Part One at Spike Island, Sonia Boyce has successfully taken the project on to it's next stage at the Bluecoat with new collaborations with Blue Room and emerging locally based artists. The Like Love tour continues in July at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke on Trent. Elizabeth Price Tate Britain/Contemporary Art Society collaboration As part of Contemporary Art Society's centenary year collaborations, Elizabeth Price has been invited to create a display using the Tate's collection as a starting point as well as drawing on her own work and interests. Elizabeth received the ACE South West residency at Spike Island in 2008 which resulted in the stunning exhibition User Group Disco, in Gallery 1 in 2009. Clare Stephenson at Pumphouse Gallery, London Clare Stephenson undertakes another collaboration with Alex Pollard in their current show at Pumphouse Gallery in London. Clare undertook her first major solo show in a public gallery, She-who-Presents, at Spike Island in 2009. | | | |
