Critiquing Louis I. Kahn:
A film screening and talk by
Meera Godbole-Krishnamurthy
Louis I. Kahn, who died in 1974, is considered to have been one of the most important architects of the twentieth century. In the deeply personal journey of MY ARCHITECT, Nathaniel Kahn, the illegitimate son of the legendary architect undertakes a five year, worldwide exploration to understand his long-dead father. He reveals the haunting beauty of his father's monumental creations and takes us deep within his own divided family in a film that is an universal investigation of identity, a celebration of architecture and ultimately, of life.
Meera Godbole-Krishnamurthy's debut novel, Balancing Act (Penguin/Zubaan), deeply rooted in architecture and set against the backdrop of the Salk Institute, is based on extensive research into the life and words of Louis I. Kahn. In the story, MY ARCHITECT acts as the starting point for the protagonist's journey from a professional architect to practicing stay-at-home mother.
Meera was born in Mumbai and has lived in the Philippines, France, and the United States. She studied art and architecture at Oberlin College and Columbia University and received a Masters of Architecture from the University of Virginia in 1992. She has participated in writing workshops at Stanford University, the University of Iowa, UC San Diego and the La Jolla Writers Conference. She was an Adjunct at the New School of Architecture and Design in San Diego. As an artist, she has sold several paintings and shown her work at exhibitions in California. She moved to India in 2006, and after a year in Bangalore, now lives in Mumbai. She teaches fiction writing through the Pomegranate Workshop and is currently working on her next novel.
